After all the planning and preparation, we opened to the public on November 1. And our first guests have been very complimentary of our home and the warmth they feel when they are here (despite some frigid outside temperatures). The article in the local newspaper, Voices, about our re-opening was heartening; see the News and Special page for a link to the article. We were also delighted by the comments from the local business community who attended our first Open House. So we are off to a great start and with no second thoughts about whether this was the right thing for us to do. But we were a bit daunted by all those leaves from the 100 year old Sugar Maples, Norway Maples and fruit trees that adorn this property. The beauty that was fall became a sea of biomass on our lawn. A few good winds helped to redistribute the mass, but not always where we wanted it to go. Thanks to the help of Ed and Nate Stovell from Bermuda, we made great progress on raking the leaves to where they belong. Today we had an arborist visit the property. And now we see the leaves not as a nuisance but as a source of nutrients and soil for our spring gardens. And so the cycle continues - that the leaves of fall become the source of spring growth.
