April, 2005

Now that the snow has ceased, our perennials are gradually taking a chance and popping up out of the still cool ground hoping to reach the warmth of spring. We are excited at the prospects of greeting these plants since it will be our first spring at Cornucopia. As we clean out the leaves of fall we find little nests from the many chipmunks who make their home here too. The birds are returning from the south and we are keeping the feeders full. Some nights the deer help themselves to the bird food by butting their heads against the feeders.

The water garden is all cleaned out and Freddie, our Yorkie, watches as the frogs hop from the wall into the water. The patio is set up for reading and relaxing, and the lounge chairs are awaiting the guests.

While the winter had us focused on the beautiful interiors of Cornucopia at Oldfield, we now are spending our days readying the grounds for our guests. The lawns are perfect for a game of croquet, badminton, or horseshoes and of course you might just take a nap in the hammock.

In April, we had a wonderful group of knitters who spent a weekend here sharing laughs, food, stories, and love. The used Cornucopia as a meeting place coming from southern Virginia, places in upstate New York and others. While here they visited a couple of local knitting shops and had a big yarn swap along with the constant exchange of creative ideas. We would highly recommend this type of getaway. It was a relaxed way for our guests to do something they love to do leaving all the details to us. Let us plan a special group getaway for you, your family, and friends.
