Talk of the Table

August, 2005

There are many aspects of inn keeping that we enjoy, but one of our favorites is the conversations that take place around our breakfast table.  When interesting guests (and all of our guests are interesting in their own way) get together, we are thrilled to hear the spirited conversations that take place.

For example, we recently had a full table with two teachers, a landscaper, two interior decorators, a financial planner, an electician, a homemaker and a presidential portrait painter.  The conversation began with some humorous anecdotes about famous people they had met or worked with and then moved to more serious topics including our education system.  There were honest disagreements but also a realization that often times people have the same concerns and are saying the same thing but with different vocabularies.  In other words, real communication.

The subjects are not always so serious; often they are about sharing life stories and looking for commonalities. It is wonderful to watch as near strangers will open up to each other about their concerns, fortunes and misfortunes.  Many have thanked us for these conversations and note that it is the open and welcoming environment that we create.  We are not sure we can take all the credit, but we love the result.

Not all guests want to be involved in discussions and we recognize that some just want peace and quiet.  We are glad to provide them with their own space at breakfast.
